Position Summary:

The Lab Supervisor will work closely with other departments such as: Winemaking, Cellar and Bottling throughout all stages of production. This position requires attention and adherence to lab quality requirements, support of quality initiatives, teamwork, and a proven work ethic. The person who fills this position will work with management and other members of the lab team to ensure continuous improvement in the lab while ensuring that analysis, trials, and special projects are executed in a timely and accurate manner. The individual will need excellent communication skills both written and verbally and will need to communicate effectively with their team as well as their manager and other departments. The supervisor will oversee scheduling lab employees’ schedules as well as delegating team members to perform various tasks to keep up with production workflow. Will also be responsible for career development and performance evaluations for team members as well as upholding a positive and professional environment in the lab.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide lab supervision and support of all processes and team members
  • Ensure that all analysis, trials, and specials projects are completed accurately and in a timely manner in addition to assessing priorities for tasks based on productions needs
  • Must have a deep understanding of wine and be able interpret wine analysis results and communicate these results with the winemaking and cellar teams
  • Review all data for accuracy and maintain online databases
  • Calibrate all machines daily and be able to train team members on calibration procedures as well as being proficient in troubleshooting and preventative maintenance
  • Work with vendors to schedule yearly maintenance on lab equipment
  • Must consistently perform inventories on lab supplies and keep the lab fully stocked while staying within the budget
  • Be able to interpret a budget and plan out spending accordingly as well as budget for future equipment replacement
  • Oversee all quality control during bottling runs and train lab employees to perform quality checks on the bottling line
  • Perform microbial testing on all wines in addition to sending out wines for microbial analysis, allergens, pesticide, and metals etc. after bottling to external labs and keep accurate records of analysis
  • Interview and hire seasonal lab interns for harvest
  • Create the schedule for all full-time lab employees as well as seasonal harvest interns
  • Manage the training of lab personnel including lab team meetings and continuing education while keeping proper training records
  • Coach and mentor employees while giving them performance feedback and career development opportunities
  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness and organization of the lab
  • Create S.O.P.’s for new methods and techniques and train employees using existing S.O.P.’s.
  • Follow and enforce all lab safety protocols as well as perform monthly lab safety inspections

Requirements:

This position requires a B.S. or M.S. degree in Enology, Chemistry, Fermentation Science, or a related field and a minimum of 3-5 years related lab supervision/management experience. A qualified candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organization is essential. Advanced computer skills in Word and Excel are required. Previous winery experience and bilingual skills in Spanish are preferred. Availability to work flexible shifts and overtime especially during harvest is required. This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, occasionally reach with hands and arms, and occasionally to sit, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds is required. 

Pay Range:

$64,480.00 -  $79,573.72 - $95,488.46 annually
