Reporting to the Director of Finance this leadership position is responsible for supervising all aspects of cost accounting for Jackson Family Wine companies.  This includes managing the Senior Cost Accountant and Staff Accountant and supervising the item cost roll and work order close process, ensuring that it is implemented in line with budgeted assumptions. Further the Cost Accounting Manager maintains a positive team culture that motivates the team towards a continuous improvement mentality. The Cost Accounting Manager ensures that the team delivers reporting, business processes improvements, COGS & manufacturing variance budgeting and forecasting, with control and accuracy. 

COGS include: grapes, bulk wine, dry supplies and finished goods across all wineries and production sites. This individual helps to define the budget assumptions, variance forecasting and reporting, and the COGS models and processes. They also foster a culture of business partnering by encouraging and enabling the team to partner with winemaking, operations and IT.  This position will be responsible for the activities outlined; however, additional tasks may be assigned as the company’s priorities change.  

Please Note: This role will work from our corporate office in Santa Rosa, CA. We are willing to cover relocation costs for the right candidate.


Reporting and Forecasting and Budgeting – 35% 

  • As the cost accounting lead, own all P&L and balance sheet impacts of COGS and manufacturing variance
  • Use comprehensive cost accounting knowledge to communicate and report to the CFO and senior finance management all COGS and manufacturing variance drivers 
  • Support the Director of Finance in developing and updating the standard costing modelreporting and analysis  
  • Utilize an in-depth understanding of the winemaking system (BIMS) and JDE to conceive build and complete accurate COGS and MV reporting, forecasting and analysis  

Team Management – 20%  

  • Set and manage the daily priorities of the Senior Cost Accountant and Staff accountant  
  • Ensure team resources and time are used efficiently and effectively with a focus on team execution of deliverables in line within deadlines 
  • Remove roadblocks for the team and escalate issues as required, clearly communicating risks to work delivery  
  • Set annual goals and evaluate the performance of the Senior Cost Accountant and Staff Accountant  
  • Foster a positive team culture of business partnering and continuous improvement 

Cost Accounting – 20%  

  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and ensure the consistent application of cost accounting principles  
  • Ensure that accurate SKU COGS are maintained through a secure and reliable cost roll process that is executed by the team  
  • Respond to cost related requests from stakeholders within the organization  
  • Oversee that accurate NPD cost estimates are completed by the team based on clearly defined assumptions   
  • Be the costing subject matter expert for grapes, bulk wine, dry supplies and finished goods  

Work Order Closing – 5%  

  • Ensure that the monthly accounting work order close is being executed in a timely, efficient and reliable manner by the team with all work orders fully closed every month end  

General Accounting –10%  

  • Review and approve all monthly journal entries relating to manufacturing variances  
  • Prepare LIFO, NRV and write down calculation and reports as required for internal stakeholders and external auditors  
  • Maintain global accounting policies and procedures with respect to cost accounting  

Business Process Improvements – 10% 

  • Be the cost accounting lead for projects that continuously improve the costing models and processes 
  • Ensure all cost accounting processes are efficient and are effectively partnering with relevant stakeholders (iewinemaking, operations and IT)  


Essential Skills, Experience, and Education 

  • 5+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment 
  • 3+ years of supervisor experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or the equivalent in education/experience 
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices 
  • Expert in cost accounting and standard costing methods and principles 
  • Advanced Excel skills 
  • Strong knowledge of ERP system inventory and cost modules (JDE a bonus, and ERP implementation a bonus) 
  • Ability to independently conceive and build management reporting and analysis 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills 
  • Flexible and able to readily adapt to changing demands and processes 
  • Strong experience implementing process changes 
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow of a team 
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of cross functional teams 
  • Ability to build cross functional engagement and buy-in 
  • Wine industry experience is a plus
